The Year of the Warrior

 Here are two scenes from Lars Walker's The Year of the Warrior. Based around the historical viking Erling Skjalgsson, I'd recommend this book (and series) to any fan of good fantasy stories.

Below is simply my conception of said viking. Above that is a scene of Erling dealing with his anger in a non-murderous way. Erling is a Christian Viking; as a result he's often at odds with traditional Norse culture on a number of subjects. To deal with the inevitable rage, he walks alone at night to the shore and hurls rocks into the surf. That is where the book's protagonist (an Irish Priest) finds him.

By the way, I'm trying to work in a different style here. Rendering figures with lines is much, much faster than painting them. It's an elegant style really.

Forest Sketch

Niflheim

I was reading up on Norse Mythology, and I was inspired to paint Niflheim, which was the Norse version of Hell. It's described as being cold, dark, and misty. This undeworld is ruled by Hel, the merciless daughter of Loki, who appears as a beautiful woman from the waste up, but has only skeleton legs. If you were a viking, and you had the misfortune of not dying battle, but bed, you might end up here.

The cold blue fires are lit by the denizens of this realm, and frozen into the cliff is the corpse of a frost giant who displeased the cruel goddess.

 I'm trying out new techniques for efficiently rendering the head, and I came up with these. Each image was free of photographic reference, but some of them ended up looking like real people anyway.

The Long Lake, Laketown, and The Lonely Mountain: key locations from The Hobbit. I tried to draw it just as I imagined it when I first read it as a child. 

Beorn

I'm listening to The Hobbit audiobook recorded by Rob Inglis, who does a masterful job of narrating the characters. This is my conception of Beorn, my favorite character from that novel. All in all, this image took under an hour.
