Here's another plane design that's been sitting around my sketchbook some months now. The title refers to a fictional air plane race I though of which starts in Tunisia, turns south at Cairo and stretches out to Djibouti. After that, it's the first plane to Port Elizabeth which gets the prize. (Could be X number of Swiss Francs and for our hero, the girl.) Anyway the other plane I did is probably a competitor in the race as well. Stay tuned for more in this series.

Also, if any French speaking viewers notice something wrong with the grammar or spelling of the title, please let me know. My French is really bad.

A ten minute sketch to test out an open source painting program called Mypaint. I like the brush engine, but the lack of photoshop tools leaves something to be desired. Still, it's a great app nonetheless.

This is part practice, part fun on my part. Everything is based on a quick 3D sketch in Google's 3D suite, so if the perspective looks off, blame Google. You might also notice that the colors are a bit cooler than my normal paintings; this was a conscious decision based on the fact that too many of my paintings are based on specific lighting and environmental factors that I'm fond of.

Some people were asking what the interior looked like, and I figured that I was just as curious about it as they were. Here's the cockpit, which needs just as much work as the exterior. You'll notice the old airplane like instruments, which came standard. Right now, they serve as backup- replaced by an array of multifunctional computer screens. Some of them show exterior views from different telescopic cameras around the ship, to give the pilot a clear view while taking off and landing. Lots of panels have been torn off to expose the electrical system, which as you no doubt have guessed, needs rewiring.

Here's a color and texture study. I was really inspired by the way trees can clump together at the edge of a forest. I noticed that you don't see the trunks, just vegetation and shadow. The real challenge was giving the treeline dimension; a multicolored silhouette wouldn't do.

A concept for the force projection tank, my idea for a futuristic weapon. This massive thing is basically a battleship that's not limited to water. The hull itself has armor two feet thick, and the skeleton is jointed and segmented, allowing it to flex as it moves over varying terrain.

The main cannon is not a conventional weapon in any sense. The turret area is filled with sensors that analyze targets for structural weaknesses. Once determined, the cannon projects an array of force-fields on the target, each with a different vector and strength. Then, the force-fields are released, ripping the target apart. In essence, the the force-fields act like a fist, crushing a pop can in a split second. While each field has a small surface area of about a hundred square inches each, the power they exert allows them to level city blocks or crush tanks with ease. The system is equally effective against air targets, quickly snapping off wings or crushing the crew, depending on the tank commander's malice. The weapon generates an enormous amount of heat, so ground troops are advised to stay well out of the hundred yard danger radius during weapon operation.

An updated design for the interior of Nemo's Nautilus-

I added wooden panels, tweaked the lighting somewhat, and added a fountain, for a more luxurious look. I feel this gives the room a warmer and more constrained feel, helping to sell the idea that it's actually on a submarine, albeit an opulent one.

As for the creative process, I looked at numerous pictures of old steam ships. After I had an idea about what I wanted to go for, I did some loose paintings until I got to a basic structure, which was then rendered in a 3D program, to eliminate any perspective issues that might arise as details were added. I then decided the lighting setup and the colors. Details and textures were added to finish off the piece. Thanks for looking.

This one was made in about 2 hours I think. It was a blast to paint, and I hope you find it interesting.
I should really be mattepainting, but these new brushes I made got me hooked. They're great fun to use, and can quickly render scenes. The benefit of making your own brushes is that you know exactly what they are good for. I've got cloud brushes, bark, leaf, and grass tool too.
